With 42 cars on the grid, Fast Seventies (formerly the NK GTTC), supported by the Triumph Competitions & British HTGT, brought an impressive field to the track at the Tabac Classic GP at Assen. Unfortunately, some of the riders also literally impressed – on their opponents. This is all looked at afterwards and those responsible are punished by the race management, but the innocent are left with the damage. And that's quite a shame in a historic racing series wit such beautiful cars.
Daniel Schrey was once again present with his Porsche 935 K1 and then you know that the bar is set high. Wim Kuijl had been fastest in qualifying on the damp track with the Ford Capri RS3100, and did his utmost to keep up with the turbo 911,but had to concede 12 seconds in the first race. Dieter Kuijl started in 33rd place and managed to move up to 3rd place at the finish. The Ford Escort legion lost some fast fighters in the first corner due to the skirmishes. It was local hero Jan-Willem Oosterhagen who finished fourth overall in his RS2000, then came Gerd Rijper in the Porsche RSR and then our southern neighbours Freddy vanSprundel and Marnix Dierick with more Escorts. In the small class, Carst Span was too fast for brother Timo this time. The British classification was won by Detlef Walter who managed to come out of the battle unscathed and without time penalties with his roaring V8 Warwick GT, which also applied to the numbers two and three, Ronald Blum (MGB) and Raymond Klompstra (TVR Vixen).
Race 2 was again a prey for Schrey, with Wim and Dieter Kuijl in their Capri 24 ridersagain in 2nd and 3rd place. Axel Hageman got the hang of the circuit and drove his BMW M1 to fourth place, ahead of the Porsche RSRs of Ansgar Massmann and Gerd Rijper. With six such guns in the top-6, you can safely speak of FastSeventies! In seventh place, Jan-Willem Oosterhagen was again the fastest2-litre, followed by Freddy van Sprundel. Frank de Hek with the Alfa GTV and Harry Sieljes with the BMW 2002 showed that it's not just Ford Escorts in the2-litre class. Timo Span put things in order and was, as usual, the fastestsub-1300 participant with his Mini Clubman. Stefan Rozema was the best-placed MG racer with his A, followed by René Grüter and Roland Blum on MGB.
The third race always has a smaller field, but the action on the track was no less Schrey made it 3 out of 3, while Hageman in his M1 occupied second place, until Gerd Rijper managed to pass him in what would turn out to be the last lap. Jan-Willem Oosterhagen continued to build on his Dutch championship by scoring maximum points again. He was fourth overall. Cees Lubbers steered his BMW CSL to fifth place and Freddy van Sprundel was classified sixth. In the MG's René Grüter took the win this time, ahead of Melle Van der Wal and Stefan Rozema.
